Building Private Clouds

The technology vendors and the hype clearly load up the term “private cloud” with everything and anything. However, the concept of private cloud computing has the potential to bring a huge amount of value to enterprise IT. That is, if we understand the right approach, and how to leverage the right technology to create the building blocks of the private cloud.
While the hype rages around cloud computing, most cloud implementations go the way of the private cloud and avoid the public clouds for now. Private clouds are exactly what they sound like. Your own instance of SaaS, PaaS, or IaaS that exists in your own data center, all tucked away, protected and cozy. You own the hardware, you can hug your server.

However, what defines a private cloud these days could also mean systems that are remotely hosted but dedicated to a single enterprise, and, in some cases, provided out of a public cloud data center as a virtual private cloud. Thus any cloud infrastructure that's dedicated to a single organization is getting the "private cloud" label. This includes the emerging relabeling of existing enterprise software and hardware solutions, looking to deliver cloud-in-a-box private clouds.

As you may have guessed, it just makes things more complex. Few enterprises were willing to take the risk and address the core issues.

Yes, but it’s not the only driver. There can be substantial cost benefits when leveraging cloud computing but, as we pointed out, your mileage may vary. You have to consider the cost holistically with other factors, including strategic benefits that are typically harder to define but are there nonetheless.

Cloud Computing & SOA: Getting the Links Straight Between Them

Want to know what gets my blood pressure up? It’s when there’s both a huge shift in thinking around how we should do computing, namely cloud computing, and at the same time, there’s a bunch of information out there that causes confusion. As cloud computing hype spikes to a frenzy, so does the number of less-than-intelligent things that I hear about it and its relationship to SOA.

What About Governance and Virtualization?

The idea of governance is to provide command, control, discovery, and monitoring, as well as design and development support for services that make up your architecture, including on-premise and in the cloud, and either leveraging virtualization. Most people get that, but in some cases they don't want to get that. Perhaps there is a larger opportunity here for both the virtualization technology vendors, and those that leverage this technology.

What's so limiting about governance is the fact that you're given an empty registry/repository and then are asked to fill it up with information about virtualized services that you create or, in most cases, expose. From there it's a constant struggle to keep that repository up-to-date, and thus make sure the virtualized architecture is governed properly. Indeed, we've been here before with metadata repositories that don't seem to get the maintenance they need. Perhaps we are doomed to make the same mistake with governance and virtualization, unless we come up with something clever.

The Five Basic Characteristics of SOA

The Gartner Group just listed "9 ways to measure SOA success.” Not to take anything away from Gartner, but theirs is a pretty basic list, if you ask me. Indeed, these nine measurements are really about any successful architecture, using SOA approaches or not, which is fine. However, I have a few of my own that are more specific to SOA.

Those who approach virtualization these days are often taken aback by the complexity of the architecture when faced with the number of layers they must deal with to deploy virtualization. Most typically consider virtualization around data center optimization or private clouds, and find it difficult to get their bearings as they wade into their first virtualization project.

SOA World Expo: Virtualization-in-a-Box?

Earlier this month I attended the IBM Impact conference in Las Vegas. The core theme of Impact was "Smart SOA" and how cloud computing comes together in the enterprise, with the emphasis on private clouds. The core notion of private clouds for IBM is really about extending their experience in virtualization, which is vast, into the more modern world of cloud computing. They hope to sell some hardware and software in the process.

While cloud computing is a great fit for some applications, and/or other architectural components, it typically won't be a fit for all applications and/or architectural components. There will always be some data, services, processes, and complete applications that you want to keep within your firewall for a number of reasons, including: Compliance, privacy, fear, control, and cost.

The Realities of Cloud Computing

Data.gov Will Redefine Data-as-a-Service

I’ve been in several meetings recently that have hit on the topic of Data.gov. Data.gov will become a repository for all the information the government collects, and that information will be in turn available to anyone who needs it. Pretty positive move, if you ask me. However, the existing data-as-a-service providers that traffic in government data could find that they are soon suffering from relevancy problems.
